Some years ago when researching my Cordes family that migrated from Germany in late 1840s, I corresponded with a man by the name of Cordes from Germany who explained that the name evolved from the practice in the real old days of using only surname say of Cord and no one had a "first" name and they began distinguishing children as being: "Cord's son" and this evolved into Cordeson, Cordson and Cordes.
I just re-read my earlier correspondence from a Martin Cordes who has lived in Germany all his life. His explanation of the Cordes name is: "Cordes name comes from surname of Konrad, Kurt and Cord. In 12th & 13th centuries family names did not exist, (opposite of what I wrote earlier)and a child had a first name ONLY. He was identified as 'Heinrich, Cord's son'. Cord being the first (only) name of father. This evolved into Cordsen and Cordes" follow up by: Phil Cordes 1-9-1999
The German family name of Cordes was more popular than I first thought. Yours is the first I have heard of going to Argentina. I know nothing of them. I have exchanged emails with a Vanessa Cordes who lives in Australia and whose ancestors went there in the 19th century. My ancestors came to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA in 1849, while two brothers came about 1830 to Baltimore, Maryland, USA. A Doctor Cordes came to South Caroline, USA in the late 1600s. I have run across many other Cordes families in the USA that don't connect to mine. As for their religious belief, I can only attest for my own ancestors. They were neither Catholic nor Lutheran. They were what was then called German Evangelical. Some of them later converted to Lutheran and other non-Catholic denominations. By Phil Cordes 11-1-2000

Gen. Francis Marion, the SC Revolutionary War hero also known as the "Swamp Fox", was descended from Dr. Antoine Cordes through his mother.
This is the same Anthony Cordes I see mentioned in other postings here, as he Anglicized his name after coming to Charleston (Santee area) after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes in 1697 (which opened French Protestants to persecution by the Catholic majority).
He had no children, but many South Carolinians are related to him through shared descent from Antoine Cordes.
(Including myself, thus my interest in the topic)
At any rate, Mel Gibson's character in the new movie "The Patriot" is loosely based on Francis Marion.

My grandmother, Annie Katy Julia (Cordes) Tiemann was born and raised in Warrenton Texas. Her father was Frederick Gerhardt Cordes who arrived in the US in 1869 with his father Henry and mother Anna (Ott) Cordes. Gerhardt Cordes (Henry's father) apparently came to the US with them, but never became a citizen. Gerhardt, Henry and FG Cordes all came from Oldenburg, Germany. They are burried in a small cemetery near Warrenton Texas. A few other last items, apparently Henry had a second wife, Annie (Muller) Cordes and at least one brother possibly named Bernard. He could have had two other brothers and a sister. Also Frederick Gerhardt Cordes had 3 brothers and a sister, Bernard, Eilert, Herrmann and Helena. She married a John Koepke. Last, my Grandmother, Annie had one sister, Norma who married a Fred Hueske. FG's wife was Lucy (Lenert) Cordes. Don't know if any of this connects here, but would be interesed to hear from anyone if it does.
